Mortgage Rates Drop to Lowest Point in a Year

In a housing market where home prices remain near record highs, lower mortgage rates could provide some relief to prospective homebuyers. According to ABC News, the average rate on a 30-year mortgage has recently decreased to 6.35%, the lowest level in over a year. A year ago, the rate was at 7.18%. Similarly, the average rate for a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage, often favored by those looking to refinance, has fallen to 5.51%, compared with 6.55% a year ago.

Here’s How Much Is Needed to Afford a Starter Home

As housing becomes more expensive, the amount homebuyers need to earn to afford to purchase a home also grows. According to housing market platform Redfin, homebuyers need to earn approximately $80,000 per year to afford the median-priced starter home, up 4.4% from last summer and only about $500 below the all-time high. That makes starter homes just barely affordable to families earning the median U.S. income, and unaffordable to families earning less than the median income.
