Construction death toll rises

Latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures show that 51 workers lost their lives on construction project accidents in 2023/24, with the average number of deaths in the industry over the past two years ‘statistically significantly higher’ than the pre pandemic period of 2016 to 2019. The rate of fatal injury in construction is some five times as high as the average across all industries, HSE says, with a total of 138 workers killed across all industries in work related accidents.

Data Show 24% of Homeowners Now Have Mortgage Rates Above 5%

According to financial services company Intercontinental Exchange’s (ICE) July 2024 Mortgage Monitor Report, there has been a significant shift to higher average rates. As of May 2024, 24% of homeowners have mortgage rates of 5% or higher, compared with two years ago when nine out of 10 had rates below 5%.

Construction Job Openings Remain Flat Month-Over-Month

While the construction industry has been facing an ongoing labor shortage, job openings were flat month-over-month. According to analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by Construction Dive, there were 339,000 open construction jobs at the end of May, a decrease of 2,000, or about 0.6%, from the month prior. As of May 2024, 4% of construction jobs were unfilled, down from 4.5% year-over-year.
